INTERA is a geosciences and engineering consulting firm established in 1974. While our initial services focused on the development and application of hydrogeologic models and other quantitative tools to support solving environmental and radioactive waste isolation management challenges, starting in the late 1990s, we expanded our services to include hydraulic and hydrodynamic modeling, water supply planning, GIS applications, and remote sensing to support the development and management of water resources. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, INTERA has US branch and/or project offices in Albuquerque, Carlsbad, and Santa Fe, New Mexico; Tampa, Gainesville, and Jacksonville, Florida; Torrance, California; Boulder, Colorado; Bloomington, Indiana; Honolulu, Hawaii; Houston, Texas; and Richland, Washington. INTERA has been involved in high-profile and technically-challenging projects, such as hydrogeologic characterization and modeling to support the siting and licensing of deep geologic repositories for radioactive wastes, both domestically and overseas. Many of our senior staff members are internationally recognized in their respective fields of expertise and are routinely retained to conduct peer reviews and provide expert-witness testimony and litigation support in the areas of water resources and environmental management and regulatory compliance. For the last 20 years, we have focused our quantitative geoscience and engineering skills on water resource planning, development, and management. Our services include water planning, surface water and groundwater modeling, water rights analysis, remote sensing, alternative water supply planning (e.g., brackish water, aquifer storage and recovery [ASR]), and wellfield design and optimization. INTERA’s experience in planning, developing, and managing water resources incorporates modeling, mapping, engineering, and scientific investigation. Working with state and regional water management and groundwater conservation agencies, municipal water suppliers, and industries such as mining and oil and gas, we have solved water resource challenges related to water supply quantity and quality, water rights and transfers, and instream flow requirements. Many of INTERA’s water resource solutions result from developing and applying state-of-the-art data acquisition and modeling technology. These tools are applied to evaluate a wide range of water resource issues including regional groundwater availability, reliability of water supplies, well field design and optimization, ASR, salt water intrusion, safe yield analysis, flood control, capture zone delineation, and conjunctive surface water-groundwater use. Through all these services, we bring a focus on accurately determining the availability of water resources and finding ways to sustainably use and effectively manage these resources.
Environmental investigations and site remediation represent another of INTERA’s core competencies. Whether it is investigating and remediating the environmental impacts from past site uses and waste disposal practices or obtaining permits to support ongoing or planned operations, INTERA brings the technical expertise and knowledge of regulations to facilitate compliance and site closure. INTERA’s geoscientists and engineers deliver value-added, site-specific solutions for addressing all aspects of the remediation process—from site investigation and feasibility studies to risk assessment, remedy selection, remedial design and construction management to site reuse. We evaluate site conditions, assesses risk and liability, and expedite the path to closure. Our wide-ranging experience allows us to design and implement effective, economical solutions for remediating and managing the risks of environmental impacts from petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated volatile organics (CVOs), metals, pesticides, and radionuclides associated with commercial sites, industrial operations and processes, and waste disposal facilities.
